  • Celebrity Sailor

I am not one who cares what goes on in celebrities’ lives. At the check-out counter, I really have no desire to know who is cheating on whom, who is having whose baby, or who is adopting whom. But I guess, some people do, since, those tabloids are getting glossier and thicker every year.

What *did* surprise me, however, was learning that Humphrey Bogart sailed his own sailboat the “Santana” 40-50 times a year (more than I get to sail my dinghy, that’s for sure). So, I mention this bit of trivia to Matt, and he already knew this. How? He won’t tell. Perhaps this lack of knowledge is directly correlated with my lack of diligence in studying tabloids.

Even more interesting, some die-hard guy is re-building Bogart’s old sailboat. A beautiful boat. From the sound of it, he intends to do it justice, and I applaud him. Old boats are beautiful things.

  • American Resources

I just have to vent. There are new websites cropping up every day that try to cater to medical people. I commend them for their efforts, but I have to say, Dynamed has absolutely nil to say about hypothyroidism in neonates. It is mostly geared towards helping either medical students or people in internal medicine.

Emedicine is wonderful for both doctors and patients.

Up To Date is also very helpful for summaries, especially of reviews.

    PubMed is an old standby.

The National Library of Medicine blows everyone else in the world out of the water. I won’t even apologize. That’s just the way it is.

    We have the CDC.

    We have LexisNexis.

And best of all, we have Black Cherry Fresca. (Although Matt would say that “cough-syrup”-tasting Fresca is not something to be proud of.)

  • A Bolger Boatyard

Because I am a big fan of people who dream of doing something and then actually do it, I have to advertise this one guy’s website, made possible by his baby Samantha.

“The birth of my first child, Samantha June, in July of this year, led to a peculiar circumstance; I had to stay around the house A LOT more than I was used to. I never realized how much time I wasn’t home, or how much “free” time I actually had before this occurrence. Being the lout that I am I began to invent reasons to reorganize the garage, leading to building of many shelves, a fabulous workbench and a motorboard to store my collection of (mostly) non-operating antique outboards. Lacking power outlets and lighting, a new circuit was added to my house electrical panel, conduit was run and seven new electrical outlets became available. This of course led to the purchase of the world’s greatest tool, a DeWalt Portable Table Saw with folding stand and extensions. Suddenly, setting up and agonizing over my inability to make a straight cut in a piece of wood with a circular saw was no more. I began to think I could actually build a boat. . . .”

Serendipity strikes. Do I need to have a child before we, too, can purchase a table saw, Matt?
